The Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the United Nations in New York, Paul Beresford–Hill, exchanged notes with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, Nkopane Monyane, to open diplomatic relations with the African country. Lesotho becomes the 37th African country with whom the Order of Malta enjoys diplomatic ties.

This followed a year-long effort by Special Envoy for East and South Africa, Michael P. Murphy, KM to secure the necessary approvals from the government of Lesotho.
